Supermicro Server SYS-1018D-FRN8T
Supermicro’s Server SYS-1018D-FRN8T is an excellent choice of hardware for the integrators looking to build a high performance security appliance, be that a full UTM (Unified Threat Management), VPN, fireall or any other type of appliance that requires plenty of processing power, a lot of network ports, power redundacy and room for future growth.
Supermicro SYS-1018D-FRN8T is a 1U rack mount server housed in a short-depth chassis equiped with 2 x 400W Platinum power supplies. What makes the design of SYS-1018D-FRN8T different from a regular rack server is that the chassis has the front facing interface ports among which are 6 x 1GbE copper (RJ45) Ethernet and 2 x 10GbE SFP+ ports, 1 x Management port, 2 x USB 3.0 and a VGA connector. Another important feature in the chassis design is that it is more hollow than solid – the front and rear faceplates of the chassis are as much perforated as possible leaving very little metal that may block the airflow so much needed by any server for staying cool.
The four 13,000 RPM fans located inside the server chassis may be “flipped” and this effectively changes the airflow direction in the system. So, if required you may easily change the way you mount the SYS-1018D-FRN8T server in your rack depending on the cooling architecture in your datacenter and you get both front-to-rear and rear-to-front designs in one package.
Processing power of SYS-1018D-FRN8T is amply supplied by the 16-core (!) embedded SoC Xeon D-1587 CPU. There are 4 DIMM slots on the server board (X10SDV-7TP8F), so in total you may have up to 128GB of ECC DDR4 memory in your firewall.
If you run out of network ports and you need more future growth is granted by a PCIe x8 3.0 slot which would easily hold another quad-port network port card for you – choose the media and boom – you have either 4 more SFP+ or 4 RJ45 ports in your firewall!
Disk storage is great with SYS-1018D-FRN8T – if no additional network interface card is installed you may have up to 4 x 2.5″ drives – SSD or HDD, your choice. If a card is installed then we are down to 2 x 2.5″ drives, however we have not mentioned yet that this server comes with 2 x SATA DOM and an M.2 ports on the motherboard. With SYS-1018D-FRN8T you will never run out of storage.
Having checked the list price of the appliance (hardware only) made by one tier-1 security vendor which has redundant power supply and similar number of network ports (8 x1GbE) + similar performance level – it lists for $8445. 1-year subscription for the full functionality bundle is $12,700. 3-year subscription goes for a tad above 30K. There is advantage to working with T1 security vendors – you get support, hardware warranty for as long as you have subscription etc. If you don’t have 20,000 to spend up front Supermicro’s SYS-1018D-FRN8T with one of the fine firewall software packages installed and set up on it will save you a mountain of money.
